A gorgeous map, finely colored with gilt on ships, etc..  In this case, the beauty of the cartouche may exceed that of the map image.   To accommodate the elaborate vignette, this map has been extended westward and depicts a portion of South America.

Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a professor of mathematics in Munich and a devout Jesuit. Scherer's Atlas Novus, which was printed in seven parts between 1702 and 1710, was one of the first atlases to have a unifying theme, in this case Catholicism. This particular map, though dated 1699, did not appear in Scherer’s atlas until Part Three of his atlas of 1710. There was another edition of this atlas in 1730-37.
