This view shows the major ports of the east coast of Africa and of Arabia.  These important Indian Ocean trading ports were controlled initially by Arabs.  They were first visited by the Portuguese, Vasco de Gama, during his famous trip to India around the Cape of Good Hope.  During the  Portuguese expansion into the East, these ports were seized by the Portuguese and became important trading and re-supply points for them.  Later, these ports were controlled by the Dutch, English and others.  A view of Aden is on the top with Mombaza, Quiloa, and Cefala left to right on the bottom.   French text on verso.

Braun and Hogenberg complied the famed Civitates Orbis Terrarum of six volumes in Cologne in 1572-1618.  It was the first atlas of towns, places, and views showing the known world.  Braun, a Canon of the Cathedral at Cologne, complied the text on verso describing the views.  Hogenberg engraved the views themselves.  This view first appeared in 1572.
