This is a rare map in a very rare book. It is only known to have appeared in the Spanish edition of Giovanni Botero's Le Relationi Universali, published in 1603 in Valladolid, Spain.   It is a close copy of the popular Ortelius map of Africa of 1570. De Solis even includes the three Ortelius sea monsters in the Atlantic. He does replace Ortelius' large sea battle scene at the bottom right with a sea monster and two ships. Also, on this map, many of the placenames are in Spanish.

This map is assigned a date of 1598, based on the date of 1598 on the Americas map from this book.  It is possible that Diego Fernandez de Cordova intended to publish this book in or shortly after 1598, but that his death interrupted this publication. The book was published by the Heirs of Diego Fernandez de Cordova in 1603, though a copy at the Newberry Library has a date of 24 November, 1600 on the recto of the second leaf.

Very Fine Condition, with narrow (but complete margins) as issued for the book.  High resolution image above shows these margins.  Strong impression.  This map was used for the image on page 187 of our book.
