This is a rare two-sheet map of Africa by Levinus Hulsius (c.1546-1605). Hulsius was a publisher, geographer, and instrument maker from Frankfurt who published a series of accounts of voyages. The books were published in Frankfurt and in Nuremberg.

The geography for the map has elements from a number of previous cartographers.  The placenames for the coastal areas of this map are provided in detail and likely represent fairly up-todate knowledge. This recent information came from the travel accounts of Duarte Lopes in the Congo, as written by Pigafetta in 1591, and by various Portuguese and Dutch narratives.  This particular map is state 2.
