This is an interesting early
travel book of the Eastern and Middle
States of the United States and part of the
British Provinces (Canada). The book was intended to
serve as an early version of a modern day Michelin-type
guidebook.
Detailed itineraries are
presented that cover a wide variety of places to visit in the
region using railways, stage coach, and canal travel (the Erie
Canal is shown on one of the maps). These places are Canada,
Michigan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Vermont, New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
The book
covers such aspects of travel as money, baggage, tickets,
hotels, servants, costumes, where to go, and fishing and field
sports activities.
The book
was published by D. Appleton & Co. of 346 & 348 Broadway in New
York City.
The book
contains 216 pages and 24 pages of advertisements. The book
also contains 61 illustrations of picturesque places to visit.
The book also has 29 foldout maps on 16 sheets showing
details of cities and towns, places of interest, railroad
routes, and stage roads. Important maps include the map
at the front of the book of the Eastern and Middle
States &c. and also the British
Provinces; and separate maps of Boston, New York City,
and Philadelphia, Long Island, Erie Canal, and many others.
On the
first blank page inside of the front book cover is the
manuscript signature of a previous owner of the book: “Edw.
Young – Newton. - Mass. 1859”.
A nice example. Generally clean throughout. Some minor
repairs to a few maps. Spine has been re-backed with some
loss.
