A rare sample subscription book
for A Complete History of the Great American Rebellion
Embracing Its Causes, Events and Consequences... illustrated
with Maps, Plans of Battles, Portraits, etc. by Elliott G.
Storke (1811-1879). This is a tremendous addition to any
collection dealing with the American Civil War, especially as it
was written during the war itself and not afterwards. Of added
value, this book was actively used by book salesmen during the
Civil War to sell the book.
The Auburn Publishing Company
of Auburn, New York produced sample books of this publication
that their salesmen used to sell advance copies of the book to
the public. As this was a “working” book, it is not known how
many copies of this subscription book survived probably heavy
use, and are still in existence.
The book contains 631 pages
covering various aspects of the Civil War, and also includes 93
illustrations of major figures, battle scenes, weaponry, seven
folding maps, and four single sheet maps of Savannah;
Fernandina,Florida and vicinity; Bombardment of Port Pulaski; and
Mouths of the Mississippi. Of note is a portrait of Abraham
Lincoln as he looked during his second year as President.
The folding maps, attributed
to G. Woolworth Colton, are:
-
Vicinity of Richmond
-
Middle Virginia
-
Peninsula between York and James River
-
Map of the State of Kentucky and Part of
Tennessee
-
Approaches to Savannah
-
Mississippi River from Cairo to Memphis
-
Map of the State of Missouri.
At the end of the book are
six pages of manuscript listing subscribers for the book, their
residence, post office, and occupation.
A fine example. Generally clean throughout. Some
off-setting to a few of the maps. Spine has been re-backed
