An attractive map of northwest
Africa and Morocco. The Pillars of Hercules
& Straits of Gibraltar, and Spain are shown to the right
of the map (north is to the right of the map).
Also, Fez and other important cities in northwest Africa are
identified with large images.
Blaeu credits Ortelius and his 1570 map as the source of
data for this map. Spain controlled portions of
this area from 1580 until 1640 along the coast at Ceuta,
Tangiers, and Arzilla (see the Braun & Hogenberg view
of the region in Map #AF-358, Tingis
Lusitanis Tangiara, Tzaffin, Septa, Arzilla, Sala).
A sea battle is shown in the Atlantic ocean.
The Blaeu maps are
"esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality,
historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch
cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" (Tooley,
p 28). This map has Latin text describing Fes on the verso,
with a signature of "C" at the bottom.
Reference: Tooley, Guide to Maps of
Africa, p.28-29. Goss, Blaeu's
The Grand Atlas, p 146-7.
Generally fine condition overall, with a
light printer's crease.
