An attractive map of Africa containing many of the striking characteristics of Dutch cartography of Africa from around this period.  The cartouche in this map is the same as that in the Carel Allard map of Africa from the late 1600s.  Africa is starting to take a more modern shape yet the Niger River still flows out of the Nile and the source of the Nile remains the two lakes according to Ptolemy. The Dutch Fort at Cape Town is shown. Gerard Valk collaborated with Pieter Schenk after Valk's return from England in the late 1670s.  Leonard, Gerard Valk's son, joined him in the production of this map.

Reference:  See Betz p. 437, 465-467.  Norwich Map # 75.  Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Vol III, p. 136-140.

A strong, clean impression in fine condition; slight centerfold separation only in margin at bottom, repaired and not effecting image.
