This map was prepared for Franz Wagner's Einleitung in die
alte und neuere Geographia... , a book dealing with ancient
and modern geography. The map's title, AFRICA NOVA,
is placed on the map in the South Atlantic. There is no
title cartouche. This is a rare map. This is the
first time that we have had this map available for sale.
The geography on the map generally follows a
much older mapping tradition with the two Ptolemaic lakes in
central Africa as the source for the Nile River. The Niger
follows its traditional (for this period) east to west flow into
the Atlantic Ocean. There are no lakes shown in southern
Africa. Numerous customary places for the period are
identified: e.g. St. George della Mina, Fort Nassau, etc.
An early representation for Mauritius, to the east of
Madagascar, is on the map: IS. Maurity.
Franz Wagner's Einleitung in die alte
und neuere Geographia... was published in Vienna in 1737.
The publisher was Leopold Hodl and the printer was Gregory
Kurtzbock. It is believed that there was only one edition
of this book. It is not known if this map appeared in
other books from this period.
Generally fine condition on
solid paper with no separations. The right border was
cut close, as it appeared in the book. An attractive
map.
