This large, folio map by Frederick de Wit (1629/30-1706) is finely and attractively engraved with a scene surrounding the title cartouche that shows ‘typical’ figures of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, along with trade goods and elephants and lions.  It is a classic late seventeenth century map of Africa by probably the foremost mapmaker and publisher working in The Netherlands after the demise of the Blaeu and Hondius-Janssonius publishing houses.

For much of the geography on this map, De Wit follows his earlier map of 1660 with its decorative borders which in turn was based on the geography of the Jodocus Hondius Jr. map of 1623 and the Willem Blaeu map of 1617.

This is the fifth state of the map of 1689 with a new title and with De Wit's privilege (copyright).  A total of six states of this map were found, along with some variants.

Fine Condition.  Several filled small wormholes on centerfold.  Conservation tissue on verso to support some "bleed-though" of the original color (quite typical with De Wit maps due to the heavily acidic content of the green pigment used by De Wit's colorists).
