This uncommon map is attributed to Melchior Tavernier. It is known as part of a set of the four continents and the world. Only the double hemisphere world map in the set has the imprint of Tavernier and the date of 1639 (Shirley 1993: 373: map no. 349).  Tavernier (1594-1665) was one of the most important mapsellers and publishers in Paris in the first half of the seventeenth century. He modeled this map of Africa after his 1627 map which was derived from Jodocus Hondius Jr.'s maps of 1619 and 1623. These in turn were based on Willem Blaeu's foliosize map of 1617. Considering the reduced size of this map and the inclusion of a considerable amount of geographical detail, the quality of engraving for this map is excellent.

The map in its first state of 1639 was issued separately. An example of the first state of the map of Africa has not be located, but it is assumed to exist, based on the existence of the maps of the World and the Americas (without the Tavernier imprint), both dated 1639.  This particular map is the second state of 1661.  It appeared in some editions of D'Avity's Description generale de l'Afrique.
