This is Delisle's second map of Africa, following his map of 1700 (see our map # AF-553).  Building on the information presented on his map of 1700 in its various states, Delisle adds new information on Africa based on more up to date and verifiable information.  In particular, Delisle identifies Lake Malawi (Lake Maravi on his map) and separate for the first time the Niger and Senegal Rivers in West Africa.  There are numerous other changes on the map.   The large size of this map enables Delisle to present numerous details on Africa, especially related to the French settlements (Fort St.Louis, etc.) in west Africa and Madagascar.

A large title cartouche is at the upper left.  An "Avertissement" at the bottom left discusses finding distance on the map.

This map, along with Delisle's map of 1700, served as the model for European map makers and was much copied throughout the 18th century.  The map is noteworthy for its attention to a scientific approach in the preparation of the map. Delisle exercised care, wherever possible, in the inclusion only of verifiable information. The map was constantly being updated thus there were a number of later states of this map quickly following on his original 1700 publication of this map.

Guilaume Delisle (1675-1726) is often referred to as the father of modern geography. He was elected a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences in 1702 and then was appointed Premier geographe du Roi in 1718.   This map appeared in various editions of Delisle's atlas published up to his death in 1726 and then continued by his wife and then his son-in-law, Philippe Buache.

A particularly very fine example of this important map.  This map, along with Delisle's map of 1700, should be in any collection of maps that even has a remote interest in the mapping of Africa.
