A fine map of Africa at the beginning of the extensive European
explorations of the interior, thus this map provides a precise
snapshot of how Africa was viewed by Europeans and others at
this point in history. This map is based on Delisle's 1700
and 1722 maps of Africa.
A large title cartouche is at the upper
right. A mileage scale is at the bottom left. Along
the right side of the map is a detailed listing of placenames of
Africa. There is no text on the verso. This finely
engraved map was the work of Delahaye, whose imprint appears on
earlier states of this map.
Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) succeeded his uncle, Pierre
Moulart Sanson, in the map and atlas business, and thus was able
to have access to the accumulated records of the Sansons.
Vaugondy along with his son, Didier Robert (1723-86), published an
Atlas Portatif in 1748 and an Atlas Universel in 1757 with
subsequent editions. This map appeared in those atlases.
This map went through at least 8 states. Most of the
changes relate to changes within the title cartouche as to
publication location and publisher (This map was published by
Delamarche, who succeeded Fortin, who succeeded Vaugondy).

Fine Condition overall with one
water(?)stain along the right side away from the map image.
Margins for this quite large map are likely as issued for the
atlas.
