An elaborate and finely detailed view of Cairo with inhabitants in dress of the period.   This is one of the more detailed views by Braun and Hogenberg, showing literally hundreds of houses and other features of Cairo.  The "strangely shaped" Pyramids and the Sphinx are shown on the right of the view.  Ships (along with "crocodili") ply the Nile River.   A legend describing the view of Cairo is in the bottom right.  French text on verso.

Braun and Hogenberg complied the famed Civitates Orbis Terrarum of six volumes in Cologne in 1572-1618.  It was the first atlas of towns, places, and views showing the known world.  Braun, a Canon of the Cathedral at Cologne, complied the text on verso describing the views.  Hogenberg engraved the views themselves.

This is a Very Fine example of Braun & Hogenberg's view of Cairo.   Very attractive, authentic-looking color.
