A beautiful map of
Africa in which the vignettes surrounding the map
surpass the map of Africa itself.
The left border
contains a camel, lions, and a seated African
woman. In the background are two warriors. The
right border shows a uniformed French officer
showing a document to a seated, turbaned African
holding a rifle. In the background are other
French soldiers and Arabs. Above this scene is an
Iman seated on a monument with a descriptive
legend. He is holding a tablet with the word
Coran (Koran) inscribed on it. The lower border
contains inserts of Alexandria, Cairo, and
Algiers with animals and designs.
This map is from Levasseur's Atlas
Universel Illustre, published in Paris by Combette.
The engraver of the map is Laguillermie, and the etching of the
illustrations is by Raimond Bonheur.
Reference: Norwich map #140.
