For the 1640
Venice edition of Giovanni Botero's Le Relationi, a new
plate was cut. This edition was published by Lucatonio Giunti
and his heirs in Venice in 1640.
This map of Africa is one of four maps of the
continents that appear in this book. Geographically, the map is
unchanged from the 1582 Giovanni D'Anania map, which was used as
the model for the first edition of Botero's Le Relationi
that contained maps, the 1595 Venice edition published by Grecco.
This map has a circle surrounding all
of Africa in a similar manner to the 1582 D'Anania map in its
second state. The Botero-Giunti map is distinguished from the
second state of the D'Anania map of 1582 by the
omission of the period '.' which appeared after the title of
'AFRICA.' in the D'Anania map.
