A highly desirable map of southern Africa.  What is particularly noteworthy are the early images and accompanying text of the people and some animals of southern Africa.  The people depicted are the Hottentots of the area of the Cape of Good Hope and the Namaquas further inland.  The animals depicted are the zebra, rhino, grand lizard (crocodile), marine pig (hippo), "serpent", "cameleon" (chameleon), petit lizard, and "cerf"(?).  Additional text in French describes the region of the Cape of Good Hope, customs of the people, etc.

This map and surrounding images were produced for Chatelain's Atlas Historique, initially in 1705-1720 with re-issues to 1739.  The Atlas produced by Chatelain (1684-1743) was a massive seven volume geographical work.   The text was by Nicolas Gueudeville and the maps by Chatelain.  The maps were based on those of Delisle (Moreland and Bannister) though Norwich states that this map of southern Africa was based on a map in a book of 1686 by Guy Tachard (Norwich map #161).

References:  Norwich, map #166 (see p. 186B for a color image of this map).  Moreland and Bannister, p. 132.
