An
attractive map of Africa containing a title cartouche in the
form of a block at the top right of the map with a lion at its
base. This maps appeared in the later editions of Philip Cluver's famous
Introductio in
Universam Geographicam.
Johann Wolters in
Amsterdam. This map generally follows the 1661 Cluver-Johann
Buno and the 1686 Cluver-Buno-Mosting maps of Africa, both of
which were modeled after the 1641 Cluver-Conrad Buno map of
Africa. The Cluver-Conrad Buno map in turn appears to be based
on Blaeu's 1608 wall map, and, more immediately, the 1617 Blaeu
map. This map shows the Cuama River as originating to the south
of the Mountains of the Moon, whereas on the 1608 wall map, the
Cuama river joins upstream with the Spirito Santo River and the
Zambere River flowing from Sachaf Lacus.
Betz, Map #166.
Very
Fine.
