Only one atlas was published by the De Jode family: Speculum
Orbis Terrarum, issued by Gerard de Jode in 1578, and then
re-issued by his son Cornelis in 1593 as Speculum Orbis
Terrae. This is the De Jode family's second map of Africa
as issued in 1593 by Cornelis (1568-1600). His father,
Gerard, evidently was intending to issue a revised and expanded
edition of his 1578 Speculum Orbis Terrarum, but his
death in 1591 prevented this from happening. Upon Gerard's
death, Cornelis finished the atlas, adding ten new copperplates
including this map of Africa.
The atlas was not a financial success as very few copies were
sold in comparison to Ortelius' Theatrum. However, it appears to
have received favorable comments from contemporaries such as
Petrus Montanus (Koeman 1967-71, II: 206). After Cornelis'
premature death in 1600, Jan Baptist Vrients obtained the plates
of the atlas. Vrient's widow later sold the plates to Moretus,
although there was no further use of the plates. Consequently,
all maps by the De Jode family are quite rare.
Betz, Map #27. Norwich, Map #19.
