A fine map of southern Africa showing the Cape of Good Hope and
Cape Town as far as Paarl and Stellenbosch in the east..
This is a finely engraved map that provides
considerable detail. Of particular interest, the names of
numerous early Dutch and Huguenot settlers to the Cape are
listed by the houses they occupy.. Also on the map are the
roads systems, the Dutch Fort at Cape Town, the 'kraals' of
Hottentot and other African areas, lands cultivated by the Dutch
East Indies Company for provisions for their ships to and fro
the Dutch East Indies. Robben Island (as Isola di Robbi),
the former prison of Nelson Mandela, is in Cape Town
Harbor.
Several ships along with a compass rose
are in the sea. The cartouche and the surrounding scene
are almost as interesting as the map itself: The title
is on a large stone wall. To its left of the title is a
traditional African home with several Africans; also shown
are an elephant and several rhinoceros as well as ships in the
harbor
This map is from an Italian edition of Delisle's
Atlante Novissimo, edited in Venice by Albrizzi between
1740 and 1756.
