The map shows a reprsentation of the Nile
arising from a subterranean lake under the Mountains of the
Moon. This information is taken from an account of the fountains
of the Nile by a Jesuit explorer, Pedro Paez. Paez actually
located the source for the Blue Nile river in the Abyssinian
Highlands. Kircher mixes other fancifully depictions along with
geography was that was assumed to be factual during this period.
The map also shows the Rio del Spirito Santo, which was
on numerous maps of this period, coursing parallel to the lower
border of the cavern, entering the sea at a place called Bura
mina de Oro - a place of Gold.
Cartouche lower left, consists of an elaborate scrollwork
surrounded by cherubs and angels cavorting in water.
Kircher was a noted Jesuit theologian and author. This map is from Kircher's Mundus Subteranneus,
with a collection of interesting maps that relate to underground
sources for rivers. The upper right has the
following binders instructions : Tomus 1. 72.
