This is a separately
published, beautifully engraved map of Africa. It is attributed
to the engraver, Giovanni Mazza whose imprint is on the map as
'Iouan Batista Mazza fece'. There is a dedicatory cartouche for
Francesco Moresini at the bottom right of the map. The
dedicatory cartouche is signed by Donato Rasciotti (at the
bottom of the ten line dedication, there is the very faint
signature of "Donato Rasicoiij.".). It is known that Donato
Rasciotti or Rasicotti was an editor and publisher from Brescia.
Little is known of Mazza. He
may be most known for his superb engraving of Giuseppe
Rosaccio's large, ten-sheet world map in 1597.
All of his maps are of great
rarity. The map was published separately, but may have appeared
in composite Italian atlases of the late sixteenth century. We
are aware of only two other examples of this map at the Newberry
Library in Chicago and in Bern at the Stadt und
Universitätsbibliothek.
