Henrich Petri was the stepson of Sebastian Münster and the publisher of Münster's Geographia and Cosmographia. After Petri's death in 1579, his son and heir to the publishing business, Sebastian Petri (1546-1627) or Sebastian Henricpetri as he is sometimes identified, had this new woodcut map of Africa prepared along with other maps. This map was used for the editions of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia starting in 1588 and ending in 1628. It was cut to correct and update geographical information that had become outdated in the 48 years since the first issue of Münster's 1540 map of Africa. This particular map a[ppears to be from an edition of 1598. Betz, Map #21. Norwich, Map #14. Very Fine Condition. |
