| A visually appealing as well as important map showing western
Europe, Africa, south Asia, the East Indies, The Philippines,
Japan, as well as "Terra Incognita (which was to become
Australia).
This prominent map is from
Pontanus' Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia, an
important and most interesting book that provided
extensive information on Dutch travel and colonization in
Africa and Asia, as well as the voyages of discovery in the
North Pole region in 1594-96. Pontanus was professor of
geography and history at Harderwyk, while he prepared this
book (Moreland and Bannister, p. 290).
The fine engraving, by Jodocus
Hondius, allows for much detail of the coastal areas in Africa
and Asia. The map succinctly shows what was known of
Africa and Asia in the early 17th century. Much of
Africa reflects Portuguese and Arab knowledge with their place names.
Information on Asia is based on these sources as
well as Dutch and other explorers. An insert "carte de figures" shows people of
Ethiopia, Persia, Turkey, Java, Sumatra, and China in
traditional dress. There is a later state of this map
with ships in the oceans.
Norwich, Map # 28.
Moreland and Bannister, p. 290.
An attractive map in Fine condition.
This map is not common; this is the first example of
this map that we have had in over four years. Complete
margins. The map was issued with folds for the small folio book but the folds
on this map are all solid.
