Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691) was a member of a Roman printing and publishing family, founded by his father, Giuseppe. De Rossi, working from 'alla Pace all'insegna di Parigi' in Rome, produced a number of separate and atlas maps over a considerable period of time. Besides this map, De Rossi first issued a copy of the large Blaeu 1608 wall map in 1666 and a reduced two-sheet version of Blaeu's wall map in 1670. The map was engraved by Giorgio Widman with an imprint of 'Giorgio Widman sculp', at the bottom right edge of the map.  This map is directly modeled after Guillaume Sanson's map of Africa of 1668, as cited in the title cartouche. De Rossi's 1677 map is generally a faithful reproduction of the Sanson map, substituting Italian text for French text.
