This map of ancient Africa is one of a series of maps depicting parts of the ancient world. Sanson had a particular interest in subjects dealing with the past; his early training in Abbeville was in history.  The map generally shows Africa as it was prior to the European discoveries of the sixteenth century, but it does include a more modern shape for Africa. The geographical representation of the interior follows Ptolemy and other antiquarian sources. Placenames reflect knowledge of ancient traditional African groups as well as ancient geographical places. On the east coast, Prassum Prom., the southern limit acknowledged by Ptolemy and others is placed far to the south on the Tropic of Capricorn.
