This is a landmark map
of South Africa. The map is filled with considerable detail of
the Dutch-settled areas of the Cape. The map extends eastward up the coast to past the "Plettenbergs
Colonie" and the Great Fish
River. To the north coast, the
map shows details to past Saldanha
Bay to the Oliphants river, with
some further details further to the north. There is an inset
map of the mountain ranges (Table mountain, etc.) as seen from
sea, with another inset map of the Cape Peninsula and the soundings in
False Bay.
This map
appeared in Sparrman's A Voyage To The Cape Of Good Hope,
Towards The Antarctic Polar Circle, And Round The World: But
Chiefly Into The Country Of The Hottentots And Caffres, From The
Year 1772, To 1776. The first edition was published in 1782 in
Edinburgh and London with a further London edition in 1785.
There were Stockholm editions in 1783 and 1802. This
particular map came from the Paris edition of 1787.
From Mendelssohn
Vol. 2., pp.414. "An enthusiast in the study of Natural History
... the author ... proceed[ed] to the Cape, through the
influence of his friend Captain Ekeberg with the Royal Swedish
East India Company ... made several excursions into the country
in search of natural history specimens, and he gives valuable
information respecting Cape Town and the neighboring districts
at this period ... He did not return to South Africa until 1775
... when he determined to make an expedition into the interior
with a friend named Immelamn, and they made a start on July 25th
... the narrative of their travels is interesting and
instructive, and is described by Theal as the "most trustworthy
account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then
residing in it" that had been published in the eighteenth
century ...".

Very Good Condition overall, with the
usual folds for the book (which are solid) and cut close at
left margin (where the map was joined into the book).
