A large, primary source map of the Cape of Good Hope.
A large, attractive map of the Western Cape and the Cape
of Good Hope past "Mossel" Bay and Algoa Bay in the
east. There is a large detailed inset map of the area
around the Cape of Good Hope showing names of farmers,
etc. This map served as a source for other map makers
over a number of years (Norwich, p. 241). This map
was part of Valentyn's monumental work: Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien, an
important history of the Dutch East Indies. Volume V of
the book, relating mostly to the Cape of Good Hope, contained
this map. Valentyn was a Dutch minister and a famous traveler who went
to Batavia (Java) in the Dutch East Indies in 1685, and
visited the Cape of Good Hope in 1685, 1695, 1705, and 1714.
For his book, Valentyn was supplied by the Dutch government at
the Cape with a great amount of information, including maps and
charts.
