An attractive, original color map of North and South
America. The map was originally
based on the Visscher map of 1670 of the Americas. What is
especially interesting about this map is its depiction of the
new discoveries in the Pacific Ocean. The emerging
understanding of Australia is depicted along with New Guinea,
the Solomon Islands, numerous other islands, and the Alaskan
Coast (Terra Esonis). California has its typical 17th
century representation as an island.
According to McLaughlin (p. 25), this
map is State 3 but it is basically a reissue of State 2, with
the exception of a reworked cartouche with a changed title and
the removal of two ships.
The map contains two attractive
cartouche: the title cartouche surrounded by a
decorative scene of American Indians is at the lower left and
a decorative information cartouche on the Americas is at the
upper left. No text on the verso.

McLaughlin California as an
Island, p. 24-25. Tooley, The Mapping of America,
p. 120.
Very Good Example with several
small areas that have been professionally reinforced on the
verso as a result of the oxidation of the green verdigris
color. This is a fine map.
