This is Willem Blaeu's map of the American Southeast, in the
fine artistic style typical of Blaeu's maps.
The Blaeu map shows a significant portion of the American Southeast from
Virginia through present day Georgia. The French and English
Royal Coats of Arms on the map reflect the intensifying struggle
of the colonial powers in America. "Newport nesa" (Newport
News), founded in 1621, is shown here, apparently for the first
time (Burden, p. 323).
This map is largely based on Jodocus Hondius' 1606 map and, to
some degree, the reports of the Englishman John Smith in 1590,
and a rare seachart by Hessel Gerritsz from c1631 (Burden, p.
323).
Janssonius produced a virtually identical map in 1639. The
main difference in the two maps is that in Blaeu's map the
longitudinal sequence at the lower right is incorrectly 298,
299, 200.
There are two variants or states of this map. This is
Variant B (based on van der Krogt) or State 2 (Burden) with the
water cherub on the left side showing a "tail". This particular map is
from a German language edition of Blaeu's atlas of 1647-48 or
c.1670 with the signature on the verso of a Gothic "I"
and page "29". (van der Krogt, p. 599).
Burden,
map # 253. Van der Kogt] vol.II, p.599.
Very Fine Condition. Wide,
complete margins. An
attractive map.
