This is an early map of the State of New Hampshire.
Lewis introduces numerous town placenames on this map.
Most of the important roads are also shown. The state
is divided into five counties: Cheshire, Hillsborough,
Rockingham, Stratford, and Grafton. Much of the northern
part of the state is blank, with a legend at the top indicating
an "Indian Carrying place" (a place where the Indians
could easily carry their canoes across land). There is a
notation on the map to the right of the White Mountains that
states: "The White Hills appear many leagues off at Sea like
White Clouds just rising above the Horizon.".
Dartmouth College is identified on the map.
This map was prepared by Samuel Lewis for
Mathew Carey's General Atlas, Improved And Enlarged; Being A
Collection Of Maps Of The World And Quarters, Their Principal
Empires, Kingdoms... , published in Philadelphia in 1814 by
Carey. This map is dated 1813. There is a Lewis map
for an edition of Carey's atlas of 1795; this map has the same
title but is dated 1794 on the map.

Very Good Condition. Some browning
along centerfold, mostly in margins, which is common to this map
(due to the type of glue used during the binding process). This is a good
price for this map, as it can be seen for sale for much more.
