A spectacular map of
the Americas at the beginning of European
settlement in North America. This map provides
considerable, interesting detail on European
knowledge and misinformation of the New World:
the Amazon and the River de la Plata both begin
from a common lake in the interior of South
America; the Great Lakes are not identified;
North America has the elongated northern part;
the east coast of the present day United States
has an overly enlarged bay; and, there is a flat
New England coastline. Croatoan
on the Outer Banks of the Carolinas is shown, as is the Chesapeake
Bay (Chesepiook). There is a legend at the upper right
pointing to a possible link between Davis Strait in Canada and
Aman Fretum (present-day Bering Strait). The Spanish
possessions in the Caribbean, Central America and South America
are prominently displayed.
A variety of scenes taken
from Theodore de Bry's Grand Voyages
beautify the map. Kayaks, Indian canoes,
galleons, sea monsters, and what almost looks
like a Chinese junk fill the seas. Quite famous
is the vignette that covers the bottom left of
the map showing Brazilian Indians making beer with the two
birds perched on the surround of the vignette.
Jodocus Hondius
(1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutch map
publishing family. Hondius, along with sons Jodocus II and
Henricus and son-in-law Jan Janssonius, was prominent in Dutch
cartography and competed with the emerging Blaeu family map
business.
When Jodocus Hondius acquired
the copperplates of the Mercator atlas and decided to re-issue
them in 1606, he prepared this map for inclusion in his Atlas
sive Cosmographicae...... , or Mercator-Hondius atlas
as it is commonly called. This map is from an
edition of the atlas of 1630.
This map last appeared in a French edition of the Mercator-Hondius
atlas of 1633. On the verso,
this map has a signature of "Mmmmmmmm"
and page "380". (vd Krogt, p. 715).
