This is
Jodocus Hondiuss map of the Ottoman Turkish Empire.
The map shows an area from Italy in the West to Persian Empire
in the East. Jodocus Hondius
(1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutch map
publishing family. Hondius, along with sons Jodocus II and
Henricus and son-in-law Jan Janssonius, was prominent in Dutch
cartography and competed with the emerging Blaeu family map
business.
The copperplate that
produced this map has an interesting history. Hondius had
this map prepared for his first Atlas Minor of 1607.
Sometime after 1621, the copperplate, along with the other
copperplates for this atlas, was acquired by unknown London
booksellers. This map was used in Purchas' book in
1624-25. It was re-printed for Historia Mundi in 1635,
1637, and 1639 by Thomas Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel
Cartwright.
This particular map is from the Historia
Mundi of 1635, 1637, or 1639, with a page number 835 at the top
left. There is English text on the verso of this map, and
on the accompanying extra leaf, describing the Turkish Empire.

Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici. vol.III, p.868.
Very Fine Condition. One waterstain in upper left of the
