An attractive map of Africa.  Title is set within a strapwork cartouche at the bottom left of the map.  There is a large text box, set sideways on the left side of the map, describing Africa in nine lines of Latin text.

Matthias Quad (1557-1613) was a German cartographer active at the end of the sixteenth century in Cologne.  This map of Africa is from his Geographisch Handtbuch of 1600, a general atlas of the world published by Johann Bussemacher.  Bussemacher was also the engraver of this map. Below and to the left of the title cartouche is the imprint of the publisher, Bussemacher (Johan Bussemecher excudit in Vbioru Coloniæ.). On the verso is a description of Africa in German.

The map generally follows the Mercator world map of 1569 and and the later Mercator Africa map of 1595.
