One of the more famous map images.  This example is in its 1st state and in beautiful original color.   A cornerstone map for any collection of world maps.  "A fine, ornate example of the decorative cartography of the time" (Shirley, p. 359).

This map is noted for a number of firsts:  This map was one of the earliest to name Plymouth (Pleymouth) Colony.  It was one of the first to show new Dutch discoveries along the northern coastline of Australia.  The Canadian northeast is re-drawn with present day Baffin Island now shown as an island, reflecting new discoveries. Because of the map's importance (and beauty), it was widely cited and helped foster the California as an island myth.  In general, the map follows John Speed and his contemporaries (Shirley, p. 359).

The double hemispheres map has corner portraits of Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy at the top left to right and, on the bottom left to right, Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius (Henricus' father).  The map has attractive symbolic representations of the four elements:  Ignis (fire), Aer (air), Aqua (water), and Terra (earth).  Directly beneath the double hemispheres is a scene showing representations of the other continents paying homage to Europa.

The map is dated 1630 but it did not appear in print until the 1631 Appendix of Henricus Hondius in collaboration with Johannes Janssonius.  This example is the second appearance of this map after the edition of 1631.  This map, in its 1st state, has French text and a signature of "N" with page numbers "49" & "52" on the verso.  Thus, the map is from the 1633 edition of the Hondius atlas.  There is a 2nd state of this map of 1639 to 1666, now with the date of 1641 on the map and with the addition of Joannes Janssonius.  There is also a 3rd state of 1666-1675 with a date of 1663 on the map.

You will not find a better example of this map.  This is a Very Fine Example from the Golden Age of the Dutch Baroque style.  Strong, clean map impression with rich, bright original color.  Full, untrimmed margins.

Please note:  This map is framed using conservation techniques and with archival materials and UV glass, etc.  We can ship this map with the frame at no extra cost, except for packaging and shipping.   Of course, we can still ship only this map, in a sturdy tube, at no extra cost.
