A wonderfully attractive map
of Russia and Central Asia with numerous
inhabitants and animals spread over the map with
vignettes showing eating, religion, and burial
habits with accompanying text. At the upper left is an
image of the Russian Emperor and ruler of Moscow.
The engraving was by Frans Hogenberg. The map is based on information
from the Englishman, Anthony Jenkinson, an agent
for the English Moscovy Company in Russia.
Some of the information originated
with the writing of Marco Polo.
This map first appeared
in Abraham Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 then
in all later editions to 1613. Ortelius' Theatrum
Orbis Terrarum was the first atlas that produced a
uniform series of maps of the world. The
publication of the Theatrum.Orbis Terrarum can be
considered the starting point for over 100 years of Dutch
supremacy in the production of beautiful maps and atlases.
This map is from the 1592 edition of Ortelius'
Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. There is Latin text on verso of the map
describing Russia with a signature of page "99" (vd
Krogt, p. 739).

Very Fine Condition. Rich,
original color. Complete, untrimmed margins (beyond the
above map image) with solid paper. Minor spots at bottom
left and right margins well beyond the map image. A
beautiful example of this map! The best example of this
map that we have had.
