An impressive, large map that shows the entire
course of the Rhine River from its beginning in
Switzerland until its end in the North Sea in The
Netherlands. The map also shows the Rhine's
tributaries and surrounding lands in Switzerland,
France, Germany, and The Netherlands. West is at the top of the
map.
An
elaborate title cartouche in the bottom right of
map allegorically depicts the river (and its
tributaries) as its runs through the bounty of
Europe. Nine crests (coats of arms) dominate the upper
part of the map, representing the various
territories through which the river runs:
Switzerland, Alsace, the Rhineland Palatinate,
the Archbishopric of Cologne, Kleve, Gelderland,
Utrecht, and Holland. The map is dedicated to Andries
Bicker by Blaeu as noted in the upper right corner.
This map was published by the Blaeus for
their atlases from 1635 to the 1672 Spanish edition of the Atlas
Maior. The verso of this map is
blank so it is difficult to precisely date this map.
This is one of the largest
maps produced by the Blaeus and was printed from
two plates which were joined at the time of publication.
Goss, Blaeu's The Grand Atlas of
the 17th Century World, p 58. Van der Kogt, Peter.
Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici. vol.II, p.487-8.
Good Condition overall, especially
considering that most maps of this size have various paper
issues. Professional repair to a separation entering map
to the bottom right of the centerfold from the margin.
This is one of our favorite maps of Europe.
