This is the famous portrait of Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) and
Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612).
This particular portrait is from the 1613
edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas (Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas
...). This is the first appearance of this
portrait. Jodocus Hondius died suddenly on
February 17, 1612 after a four day illness. There is some
speculation that this portrait was prepared by Hondius' widow,
Colette van den Keere, sometime shortly after his death.
Colette carried on the business after her husband's death, along
with their son-in-law Johannes Janssonius and sons, Jodocus Jr.
and Henricus.
This is an ornate engraving showing Mercator
and Hondius, each with a globe and with tools of their trade,
books and compasses. Behind them is a wallmap of Europe and
above are further globes and instruments. Surrounding the
portrait is a strapwork border and below are references to
Mercator and Hondius' birthplaces, and dates, and dates of
death. The verso contains laudatory poems and an obituary
for Hondius.
